The Production of Gabbeh Rugs
These carpets and rugs became popular among the surrounding cities to the point that they had to become organized. The production of these Persian floor coverings started to increases as the makers began ordering tones, shades and colors specific to the patterns they wanted to create. Many of these floor coverings feature geometric patterns, very basic yet beautiful to look at. Although as colors started to be ordered in, the makers hand knotted more complex and creative designs. Remaining mostly traditional, the Gabbeh rugs showed a small amount of influence from Turkish and Kurdish techniques. The main influence used is the Turkish knot, this knot makes the rugs strong and durable with up to a hundred knots per square inch. Each of the Oriental rugs and carpets from Gabbeh are completely unique. When bright and bold colors are used, occasionally ‘Abrash’ occurs. This is when occasional gray fibers appear, not altering the overall appearance of the carpet; just ensuring that each of the projects are completely one of a kind.
