Heriz Carpets and Rugs, Their Local Geography and HistoryLocated in the north-west, south of the small settlement of Tabriz, Heriz has a large reputation for the small size of the town. While the traditional techniques of making rugs have remained the same, some of the designs and patterns have been greatly influenced by a number of factors. A number of the influences come from Turkey and the modern day carpet industries, all the changes that have evolved over the years have only been positive. All of these assisting in making elegant and beautiful rugs and runners from Heriz. The Origin of Designs and Styles The boldness of the Heriz patterns date back to the Mongols from the 13th century. They invaded Iran in the 13th century and settled in the north-west, starting to the skills and talents of rug weaving in this area. These nomads possessed the talent to produce a high quality of floor coverings completely by hand with no use of modern technology. Often using the symmetrical Turkish knot, they hand knot these oriental Heriz rugs and carpets into beautiful patterns and designs. Some of the most common designs consist of geometric patterns, featuring a central medallion. The colors and shades that are used most frequently are earth tones, ranging from dark rust and brown to navy and red. These dark colors are accented on a lighter field in off whites and beiges, creating an attractive contrast. Used as the main source of income for many families, these Heriz Persian rugs and carpets were traded in near by settlements for needed supplies and necessities. Hand spun wool from local sheep was used for the pile and a strong cotton was used to weave a durable foundation.
