A Brief Historical Overview of Hamadan Rugs and CarpetsDesigned and hand knotted in west-central Iran, these Hamadan rugs and carpets come from one of the largest trade centers for oriental floor coverings. There is a wide range of designs and patterns that the Hamadan carpets feature, anything from floral and garden patterns to geometric designs. Another popular style is the Herati design; this is fairly common among the majority of tribal rugs that original in Iran.
The Making of Hamadan Rugs
Persian rugs and carpets from Hamadan are handmade by experienced rug makers who have had years of expertise. The colors that appear in these works of art vary, from dark reds and greens, to blues and rust. All of these colors look great by the contrasting yellows, beiges and off whites. All of the colors bold and soft are colored with vegetable dyes; this creates a rich and exquisite color scheme for each of the Hamadan rugs and carpets. The main materials used to craft the runners and rugs are cotton and wool. Occasionally goat hair is seen, and rarely silk is also used to create a soft texture. Quality wool is used to knot the thick pile, giving each rug a unique finish and texture while the foundation of cotton provides a durable base.
More About Hamadan
The settlement of Hamadan is a historical place, the second oldest city in Iran. With a high production of tribal rugs and carpets, they market the oriental rugs and carpets within the area. Although these floor coverings are very traditional, there is evidence of Turkish and Kurdish influence in the rugs.
