Heriz Rugs and Carpets - A Brief Historical OverviewLocated in the province of Azerbaijan, Heriz is a small settlement with a large reputation. In north-western Iran south of Tabriz, the city of Heriz is known for it’s oriental carpets and rugs. These handmade works of art are thicker, heavier carpets although still hold great beauty and elegance. The Heriz Designs and Patterns Known widely for geometric patterns and earth tone colors, these Persian rugs are primarily rust red, navy, brown and black. With the contrasting off whites and beige, they are vibrant and bold. Smaller sizes are hard to find with these Heriz rugs, the larger rugs and runners are much more common. With all of the bold colors displayed, the patterns and designs that are hand knotted into these rugs are beautiful. Usually these carpets have a medallion design in the center, using dark colors and shades to contrast with a lighter background field. Using a foundation of cotton, the Persian carpets and rugs from Heriz are strong and durable, designed to last a lifetime. With a good foundation, the quality wool is handknotted into a thick pile; creating a unique finish and texture for each rug. The colors in the floor coverings are created from a quality wool product being dyed with a vegetable extract, making beautiful colors. Taking months to make, a lot of work is put into the making of these Heriz rugs and carpets. More About Heriz Rugs Using a Persian knot that is asymmetrical, the pattern and designs are traditional. The wool that is hand knotted into the rugs is hand spun, usually off of local sheep; making the rugs originate from only the settlement of Heriz.
